Japanese man detained in Myanmar, government spokesman says | Conflict News

A Japanese government representative has affirmed the detainment of a Japanese man in Myanmar, with Tokyo requiring his delivery when possible.

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara told a news meeting on Monday that a Japanese man in his 20s had been kept in the wake of recording a show on July 30.

Kihara said the Japanese consulate in Myanmar has been squeezing the decision State Administration Council for the man’s release.

Kihara didn’t name the prisoner, yet Japanese media reports recognized him as narrative movie producer Toru Kubota.

Kubota has revealed for outlets including Al Jazeera and VICE Japan, zeroing in on ethnic clash and exile issues, as per his own website.

At least 135 columnists have been kept in Myanmar since the overthrow, as per Reporters Without Borders.

Kubota would be the fifth unfamiliar writer to be confined, following US residents Nathan Maung and Danny Fenster, and Robert Bociaga of Poland and Yuki Kitazumi of Japan. Each of the four were at last removed from the country.
